Palmetto, FL
Palmetto, Florida, is a community of about 12,800 individuals in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. The community is located in the vicinity of Terra Ceia Bay and the Manatee River in Manatee County. Numerous fishing charters operate out of Palmetto.

History

Samuel Sparks Lamb is called the "father of Palmetto." In 1868, he named the community "Palmetto" because his home state of South Carolina was known as "The Palmetto State." The arrival of the railroad in 1902 brought many benefits to the area. Now, bricks could be shipped in, and this fact led to much more fire-resistant construction methods.

Parks and Recreation

Emerson Point Preserve is a secluded and tranquil refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The preserve serves as a bird sanctuary, and birders enjoy spotting many species here. Bicyclists enjoy the network of trails, and kayakers will benefit from the launch area. Hikers and strollers will enjoy the estuary walk that includes a boardwalk. The observation tower can be a highlight of a family visit here.

Attractions and Activities

Dedicated golfers will find a true championship test right in Palmetto. Buffalo Creek Golf Course is a Ron Garl design that can play at as long as 7,000 yards. The multiple tee boxes and generous fairways make this 18-hole layout manageable for golfers of all skill levels.

The Andersen Race Park offers exciting outdoor go karting at speeds up to 50 mph. Computer tracking allows drivers to examine their performance reports at the conclusion of their experience. The staff uses a variety of techniques to keep the racers from bunching up.

Events

The Manatee County Fair is held in Palmetto each year in January. Every Independence Day, a full day of events precedes the spectacular fireworks display that is reflected in the waters of the Manatee River. Families bring their kids to the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and the DeSoto Children's Parade is another great event for the children.
